Experts Explain Cloud Seeding In Aspen

Elizabeth Stewart Severy

On Friday in Aspen, experts will discuss the science of shooting silver into the sky to produce snow, otherwise known as cloud seeding.

Propane generators eject silver iodide particles into the air that attract moisture, forming clouds, which produce snow that can boost watersheds and give ski resorts a leg up on snowpack.

There are two cloud seeders in Pitkin County: one near Woody Creek, the other on Independence Pass. They can produce snow in almost every corner of the county except the four ski resorts.

The Colorado River District wants to cover that gap.

Pitkin County Commissioners, however, want to know more about the science and safety before they approve any expansions.

The Colorado River District is hosting a cloud-seeding workshop in Aspen Friday at noon, where leading experts will present research and answer any questions the public has about the practice.
