In 1972 at the first Carbondale Mountain Fair, it was a small community event. Now, in its 46th year, it’s evolved into a weekend festival that brings in the masses.
Today Mountain Fair features a variety of vendors, live music, plus painting, dancing, culinary arts and more. Running the fair continues to be a community effort.
Nearly 300 participants volunteer their time to accommodate 20,000 attendees, including families who have been volunteering at the fair for generations.
This year’s theme celebrates water. Members of the Cheyenne River Tribe will be attending this year to represent the water protectors at Standing Rock. On Sunday morning they will lead a spiritual gathering with Native American singing and dancing rituals.
Mountain Fair starts at noon Thursday and will last through Sunday at 7 p.m. For more information, visit carbondalearts.org.
