Census Bureau Says Local Government Is Key To Accurate Census

A representative from the Census Bureau will discuss the 2020 census with Basalt’s Town Council on Tuesday.

The bureau says local governments are key to a successful census.

Basalt Town Manager Ryan Mahoney says the presenter will give council an overview of the upcoming census.

This is part of valley-wide efforts to make sure that everyone here gets counted in 2020.

Aspen City officials have worked to form a “Complete Count Committee” in the Roaring Fork Valley.

Its goal is to reach “hard-to-count” populations, including non-English speaking people, seasonal and migrant employees, and people who live in remote areas.

Some say the challenge of an accurate count will be greater in 2020 if the Trump administration adds a citizenship question to the census.

Critics argue this will lead to an undercount of Latino and Hispanic people.
