The City of Aspen and Colorado Mountain College's Aspen campus are working together on a new program that could possibly expand infant child care services in town.

In September, the town and college signed a partnership to create a learning lab for Colorado Mountain College early childhood education students that would also expand early child care spaces in Aspen.

At a June 24 meeting, Colorado Mountain College's Board of Trustees agreed to turn one unused classroom at its Aspen campus into an infant child care room. The City of Aspen's Kids First department will help launch the new facility as early as fall by covering material costs and recruiting a program director.

However, the opening may be delayed due to the pandemic's impact local budgets and the possibility that the campus could be closed in the fall.

Funding for the renovation and beginning stages of the program will be available in the existing Kids First budget. City of Aspen officials said they have not yet discussed the ultimate pricetag of the project with Colorado Mountain College officials, but they are considering using funds from this year and next year's budgets to cover the costs.
