With Construction Underway, Aspen City Hall Designs Still Debated

Over a month after breaking ground, a group is still debating the design for Aspen’s new city hall.

The 37,000-square-foot building will stand two stories high in Galena Plaza, and cost more than $30 million.

The group, Friends of Galena Plaza and Rio Grande Park, wants to tweak the existing plans to create what they call "a more inviting space." Changes include different landscaping, sculptures, benches and an espresso stand to make a better transition to Rio Grande Park.

Local architect Harry Teague is a proponent of these changes and says the area could be a community hub.

"We feel that with some effort...thinking and time, we can make that one of Aspen’s attractive gathering spaces," he said.

Teague, former mayor Bill Stirling and others will present to city council at a work session at 4 p.m. Tuesday. The group says their suggestions, which are smaller, mostly exterior changes, won’t delay construction, which is underway.
