Krabloonik lease goes before Snowmass Village

Elise Thatcher

Monday night, Snowmass Village Town Council will review the lease for Krabloonik Fine Dining and Dogsledding. It’s one of the final steps for new owners to officially take over from a previous operator, who’s charged with animal cruelty.

New owners Danny and Gina Phillips purchased the operation in December 2014. They promise to dramatically improve dog care and have already taken steps to do that. The property is owned by Snowmass Village Town government, and Council must sign off on the lease.

The Philips, former owner Dan MacEachen,, and the Town of Snowmass Village have put together a lease designed to prevent animal cruelty. Changes include best practices requirements, a compliance review committee, reducing the number of dogs, and putting the business in receivership if the new owners default-- rather than Krabloonik going back to the previous owner. There are other amendments to the lease as well.

The former owner goes before a jury trial in May for eight misdemeanor charges of animal cruelty. And, the business faces a lawsuit over an accident in 2012.
