Local agriculture proposals up for review

Marci Krivonen

Pitkin County’s Open Space and Trails Board will look over recommendations Thursday that would allow agricultural producers to work county land.

Pitkin County purchased the Glassier Open Space near Emma for $10 million. Now, the county is offering up about half of it to local farmers and ranchers for a nominal fee.

After a competitive bid process, four producers were chosen. Now they need approval from the Open Space board and county commissioners. County Land Officer Paul Holsinger says the recommendation calls for hay production, and several uses from a group called the Glassier Agricultural Cooperative.

"They put in a bid to do some small animal husbandry, plant some fruit trees, maybe do some vegetable production and cut flower production to service the local markets here."

Holsinger is confident the Open Space board will approve the recommendations. The commissioners will review them on March 11th.
