Snowmass sees a series of bike thefts in a short period of time

Snowmass Village Police are keeping a closer eye on certain areas, after a rash of bicycle thefts.

The thieves have stolen bikes from decks, bike racks and car racks at condominiums in the Woodbridge area and the upper village parking lots. A total of nine bikes have been stolen in less than a month. Police Sgt. Dave Heivly says that’s unusual.

"It is a pretty significant number for us. It’s similar to the thefts we see in the winter - we see a number of thefts over the course of the season, but to have this many in such a short time frame is a little different for us."

He says the thefts seem organized and somewhat sophisticated because the thieves are using tools to cut locks. He recommends bringing bikes indoors rather than locking them outside.
