DA’s office beefs up fraud investigations

911criminalattorney.com

District Attorney Sherry Caloia is cracking down on fraud. She’s hired and trained an investigator who’s focused on sniffing out embezzlement and other white collar crime. Caloia is no stranger to the issue. Before she was District Attorney, an employee at her private practice stole tens of thousands of dollars in the late 2000’s, and also used Caloia’s office to launder money from the Town of Marble.

“And when I called the police department,” says Caloia, “they said you’ve got to get a forensic audit before we’ll even look at it. So that was one of the reasons, when I came here, that I thought, we need some resources to be able to offer to people rather than telling them go spend another $5,000 - 10,000 dollars on an audit before we can even do anything about it.”

Caloia now has a full time certified fraud investigator on staff. She spoke with Aspen Public Radio’s Elise Thatcher about why police departments in the Roaring Fork Valley can’t do the investigating themselves.
