Advertising expert Winston Binch brings his industry skills to fight climate change.

Winston Binch is the chief digital officer for Deutch LA. He is also a skier, and a board member of Protect our Winters. He is visiting the valley with his family from California, where he has experienced the startling effects of drought.

“This fall snowpack water content levels were at like five percent -  which is like a 500 year low” said Binch.

Auden Schendler, Vice President of Sustainability for SkiCo began the Aspen U speaker series last year in response to interest from employees to have a broader discussion about the climate. He says including varying perspectives in the environmental movement makes it stronger.

“The series generally is about sustainability, but sustainability is a huge field and so it has included everything from philanthropy to poverty to climate to -  in this case - ad agencies.”

Future speakers include Aspen Mayor Steve Skadron speaking about the Paris Climate Talks and Scott Fitzwilliams, supervisor for the White River National Forest. Schendler says the apres-feel of the open event encourages discussion and inclusivity.

Binch calls climate change a universal problem, citing reports from USA Ski Team members of reduced snowfall in each place they compete.

“It’s not a political issue, this is something that affects everyone no matter what you believe,” said Binch “Republicans, Democrats, liberals and conservatives all ski.”

Binch will be speaking at 5:30 At the Limelight Hotel in Aspen.
