Eagle County Commissioners delay decision on The Fields subdivision

Elise Thatcher

Another controversial development proposal is being considered for the El Jebel area, with Eagle County Commissioners reviewing The Fields proposal on Tuesday night.

The more than 4 hour meeting was reminiscent of public hearings about the Tree Farm proposal last fall, when scores of area residents criticized the development. Tom O’Keefe was one of many neighbors who raised concerns on Tuesday night about the number of units proposed in The Fields project. More than a hundred homes and duplexes could be approved.

“I don’t think the high density thing is really what we want in this valley,” said O’Keefe. “There is a need for housing, but these mega developers is certainly not the way to go.”

O’Keefe and others are also worried about the potential cumulative effect with a possible Eagle County affordable housing project nearby. Overall, those who commented were younger than the ones who showed up at meetings during review of the Tree Farm proposal last year.

The developer of The Fields has said a lower density in that possible subdivision would mean increasing the price of homes higher than the targeted half a million dollars.

Eagle County Commissioners will take up the Fields proposal again at the later date, once there is more information about CDOT’s take on the project and other details.
