Council touring pot shops

Elected officials are taking the high road today when it comes to understanding the local marijuana industry. Aspen Public Radio’s Carolyn Sackariason reports.

Aspen City Council members are taking a field trip this afternoon to three pot shops in the downtown core. They’ll spend 20 minutes or so at each one in hopes of learning something about an industry they are considering regulating.

A couple of months ago, council began contemplating limiting the number of marijuana stores, with some officials arguing that there are too many as it stand now and they are affecting the mix of retail options downtown.

Aspen City Clerk Linda Manning is leading the field trip. She said most, if not all of the council members, have never stepped foot into a pot shop.

Council will meet at 4 this afternoon at Silverpeak Apothecary with their IDs in tow and then head to Stash and Native Roots.
