Off season hits Aspen in full force beginning today and the traffic delays and closings are here to prove it.

Aspen’s annual Street Improvement Project begins and will carry on through the end of September. To prepare for the harsh winter weather, downtown streets will be roto-milled and repaved. Over the course of the month, east and west throughways on Main Street, Bleeker, Cooper and Durant will all be worked on, as well as the north and south streets through the West End and near the Original curves. The full list of street paving by day is available here.

The priority is set by traffic volume and public safety, as well as the structural integrity beneath the existing roadways. The City of Aspen has a set an amount of funding it can use on minor street repairs, if a street is too damaged it goes on a waitlist for an entire repavement. Drivers can expect detours and delays throughout the month.

Over the weekend the Aspen Recreation Center closed for a month of maintenance. The Red Brick Recreation Center reopens today after being closed to maintenance and cleaning. The rock climbing wall has new routes, the ceiling and lights were cleaned, and the bathroom floors were redone.
