SkiCo endorses worker measures this election season

The Aspen Skiing Company is staying out of most election decisions this year, but a few ballot measures have a direct impact on SkiCo and its employees.

Some years the company has taken a public stand on local ballot issues, but this year the only endorsements offered are state and regional measures that might affect staff. Sustainability Director Matt Hamilton said SkiCo tries not to throw their weight around needlessly.

“I think we try to be pretty thoughtful about our position as the largest employer in the valley,” said Hamilton. “I think we want to inform people but don't want people to feel like we are the 800 pound gorilla in the room because I don't think we think of ourselves that way.”

An internal memo to employees sent this week summarizes the many ballot issues in the area, but only offers recommendations on a few. Statewide, SkiCo is in favor of raising the minimum wage and allowing unaffiliated voters to participate in the primary process. SkiCo is recommending a “yes” vote on an Eagle County measure that may bring housing to the valley. The company opposes Amendment 71 which makes it harder to change the state constitution.
