Man charged after crash kills a Carbondale teacher

A New Castle man faces manslaughter and other charges after a deadly car crash that killed a Carbondale teacher last month.

On Friday, an arrest warrant was issued for 31-year-old Jeffrey Burk. He’s also charged with attempting to influence a police officer and second-degree assault, according to Garfield County Sheriff spokesman Walt Stowe. Burk turned himself in. His bond was set at $100,000.00.

On Aug. 16, Shaw Lewis, a 39-year-old teacher at Carbondale’s Ross Montessori, was killed on I-70 at mile marker 93 after being pulled over by a Colorado State Patrol trooper. Burk’s vehicle slammed into Lewis'. He was killed instantly and the trooper sustained injuries.
