Basalt’s attorney, Tom Smith, announced his resignation to the town council on Tuesday night during an executive session.
Smith couldn’t be reached for comment on Wednesday afternoon, but Basalt’s Mayor, Jacque Whitsitt said his announcement came as a surprise.
Whitsitt said Smith expressed to the council he felt it was time to do something else.
She said Smith served as the attorney for over a decade. His resignation is effective April 1.
