Officials are preparing for a hot, dry summer, and with it, increased fire danger. Glenwood Springs is hosting an event Saturday to help residents prepare for wildfires.
Local firefighters will have information on how to protect homes and what to do if a fire does occur. This includes things like clearing dry brush and flammable material from yards and patios, and having an evacuation plan.
Sarah O’Brien with the Glenwood Springs city manager’s office said it’s important that residents across the valley are prepared during the dry season.
“Wildfires can spread quickly, especially with the terrain up here,” O'Brien said.
This year’s low snowpack, combined with an expected drought, means there’s an increased potential for a significant wildfire in our area this summer.
Officials across the Roaring Fork Valley say now is the time to take steps to mitigate those risks.
The event in Glenwood Springs will include fire truck demos and time to ask firefighters questions. It runs from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Glenwood Springs Community Center.
