Marchers Rally Against Family Separation

More than 50 people gathered in Paepke Park last night to protest the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s practice of separating families accused of crossing the border illegally.

Secretary of Homeland Security Kristjen Nielson, who initially defended the policy, is expected to speak at the Aspen Security Forum today. Organizer Blanca O’Leary said those who marched have a clear message for Nielson:

"We want her to know, loud and clear, that people across America, people think that the policy is inhumane, it's un-American, it's unpatriotic and it has to stop," said O'Leary.

The march down Main Street was part of the larger "Families Belong Together" movement. Protesters carried signs that said “Stop Family Separation” and “Be kind”. O’Leary and others stressed the importance of family reunification. The Trump administration has said this process is underway.
