Garfield County might not owe the oil and gas company Encana as much money as it thought it did.
In 2016, Encana claimed to have paid the county too much in tax. It wanted its money back.
At the beginning of 2019, the county hired an accounting firm to comb back through the numbers with Encana.
According to county assessor Jim Yellico, the county and special districts like Colorado Mountain College and Garfield County Public Libraries aren’t on the hook for over a half million dollars that they thought they were.
Now, the county and special districts will only return over $180,000 to Encana.
The accountant’s findings will be presented to the county commissioners Monday morning.
