Carbondale is officially a Colorado Creative District. The announcement came yesterday. The town joins 12 existing creative districts in the state.

A Creative District is a town that has shown a dedication to the arts and the people, and businesses that work in them. The panel that reviewed the applicant towns judged the places on their unique locations, integration with the community and the endorsements of local governments.

Multiple groups in the town have been working to bolster its creative economies. Art is also being installed along the Rio Grande Trail.

Cities selected are eligible for up to $40,000 in state funding.

"These 2016 certified creative districts are great examples of how the arts create exciting places for people to visit and live," said Governor John Hickenlooper in a press release.

Breckenridge, Crested Butte, Mancos and Fort Collins were also selected. The certification lasts five years.

Patrick Fort grew up in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, nurturing a love for ice hockey and deli sandwiches. After moving to Colorado in 2010 to attend the University of Colorado to study music, Patrick discovered his love for journalism. In 2013, Patrick created and hosted the award-winning radio program Colorado Stories, a news program that covered CU and the surrounding community. An avid mountain and road cyclist, Patrick also referees youth ice hockey. He loves '60s pop bands and and trying new recipes ranging from milk-braised carnitas to flourless cakes.
