Week in the Arts: January 8, 2018

On Tuesday at 6, Alice McDermott kicks off the Winter Words series, hosted by Aspen Words at Paepcke Auditorium.

Wednesday the Aspen Chapel Gallery’s latest exhibition opens. “7 X 7” will feature student artists from the Roaring Fork Valley’s seven high schools. The opening reception starts at 5.

 

Also Wednesday in Basalt, the Ann Korologos Gallery celebrates the opening of its newest exhibition “Winter in the West.” That reception also starts at 5.

 

And Wednesday again at 5, Aspen Film will screen the Grateful Dead documentary “Long Strange Trip” at the ISIS Theatre.

 

Thursday Aspen Art Museum presents the second installment of the Great Debate series. Four community leaders will debate “Is the Local More Important Than the Global?” at 5.

 

Also Thursday, the 2018 Winterskol kicks off with Aspen History 101 at 5:30 and a screening of Aspen Extreme to follow at 7:30 both at The Wheeler Opera House.

 

Friday at The Art Base, there’s the opening reception for the exhibition “Half Lives” in Basalt at 5.

 

Friday in Carbondale, the 38th annual Valley Visual Art Show features works from 50 Roaring Fork artists in the the Lauchpad’s R2 Gallery. The opening reception starts at 6.  

 

Friday in Aspen, The Wheeler Opera House hosts comedian Matt Iseman at 7:30 p.m.

 

And Friday in Basalt, Democracy Now!’s Amy Goodman will give a lecture and book signing at The Temporary. That event starts at 7.

 

Both Friday and Saturday in Aspen, Tatiana-Eva Marie & the Avalon Jazz Band will perform at 7 and 9:15 downstairs at The Little Nell as part of the JAS Cafe.

 

Saturday in Carbondale, Alya Howe hosts the first Salon of 2018 at the Launchpad starting at 6:30.  
 

Saturday night at The Wheeler Opera House, folk artist Birdtalker takes the stage at 7:30.
