Whole Foods CEO and co-founder John Mackey was in town last week for the Lead with Love summit. He told attendees a higher purpose is the key to success in the business world.
Under Mackey’s leadership, Whole Foods grew into a multinational company, buying out smaller competitors. While Mackey is known for instituting ethical business practices, he also recieved criticism for speaking against employee unions.
During an afternoon focused on mindful business, Mackey credited Whole Foods’ success to starting with a simple aim.
"I just had the idea as a young person that I wanted to sell healthy food to people. Seemed pretty easy. But I found out a lot of other people shared that purpose," he said.
Mackey said he believes that Amazon, the new owner of Whole Foods, is devoted to the goal of creating value for customers.
