Carbondale visual artist Wewer Keohane wants to help fund a project that uses creative expression to address mental health issues.
Keohane credits art with saving her life. After a breast cancer diagnosis, she struggled with depression. Creating art helped fuel her will to live.
"The ability to make something that expresses what’s going on inside of you is healing in itself," she said.
Now, she’s formed the “Art Saves Lives” scholarship in collaboration with Carbondale Arts. It’s open to artists, counselors or anyone else who’s interested in using creativity to respond to mental health issues in the Roaring Fork Valley.
The final project will involve at least one community event on the school-bus-turned-mobile-art-studio Rosybelle.
The deadline to apply is December 15.
