Poet Ada Limón visits Aspen Monday as a part of the Winter Words series. Her 2018 collection “The Carrying” delves into both the personal and the political.
Limón says while writing poems for “The Carrying,” she found it fascinating that she was going through a time of personal suffering, struggling with infertility and vertigo, at the same time that the country was in its own difficult moment, deeply divided after the 2016 election.
Her poems reflect on the strength it takes to keep moving forward.
"I’m a deep believer in radical hope and resilience," she said, "and that, sometimes, just survival and getting through the day is a huge form of rebellion."
Limón found solace in poetry, something she hopes others can find as well in the face of a 24-hour news cycle and a tumultuous world.
"Poetry can give us a moment of breath and a little moment of presence just by saying, hey, I’m here and so is the tree and so are you and, you know, we might be ok," she said.
