The Sunnyside prescribed burn planned for this spring if conditions allow, is a rare and critical wildfire mitigation effort that will help protect our homes and forests. This planned burn will reduce the risk of an uncontrolled wildfire by clearing out overgrown, fire-prone vegetation that hasn’t burned in over 150 years. It will also improve wildlife habitat by stimulating the growth of fresh vegetation for elk and deer. Understanding what’s happening is key—this is a controlled and intentional fire, not an emergency. Attend the March 4th community meeting at 5:30 p.m. at Aspen Fire’s downtown station to learn more about how this fuels reduction project will benefit Aspen’s long-term safety and resilience.
