Aspen Asks For Input On Plan To Allow Businesses On Sidewalks and Streets

via City of Aspen

The City of Aspen is asking for input on a plan that would allow local businesses to operate on sidewalks and streets in the downtown core. In a press release, the city said doing so would “increase physical space to facilitate social interaction, community connection and commercial activity while adhering to Pitkin County Health Order gathering guidelines.”

An online survey asks which streets in the city would make sense to host dining tables and storefront operations. Another question asks residents whether streets should be shut down entirely or only partially closed.

A question in Aspen's survey outlines options for businesses to move onto sidewalks and streets. One option would shut streets down entirely, while another includes a partial shutdown and one-way traffic.

The survey is open until noon on May 25. The county anticipates moving to the next phase of its public health order. Efforts to move businesses out onto sidewalks and streets would not begin until early June.

In a press conference Monday, Colorado Governor Jared Polis encouraged local governments to allow restaurants to operate in streets and parking lots, saying it would be an important step in returning to normal volumes.
