Twenty local artists pay tribute to the Bauhaus School of Art and Architecture at an exhibit opening Wednesday in Aspen. They’ve created posters using quotes from Bauhaus teachers, on display at the Red Brick Center for the Arts.
One reads, "Limitation makes the creative mind inventive." Another says, "God is in the details."
Red Brick Executive Director Sarah Roy says the printmaking exhibit “Great Ideas of Bauhaus” shows one enduring idea from the German design school.
"Creativity, not only for artists, but for every individual out there, should just be encompassed into every facet of our life," she said.
Bauhaus artists applied their creativity to advertising as well as traditional art. In the 1950s, the Bauhaus’ Herbert Bayer created an ad campaign for Walter Paepcke’s company. It inspired the new show, and ads from that campaign are also on display.
“Great Ideas of the Bauhaus” is part of the Roaring Fork Valley’s celebration of the 100th anniversary of the school of art. An opening reception starts Wednesday at 5 p.m. An artists’ talk and a live printmaking demonstration will be held June 11.
