Pitkin and Garfield Counties are working together to expand broadband to remote areas of their counties by creating the Garfield Pitkin Broadband Authority Board. 

At the joint work session on Tuesday, Pitkin County and Garfield County approved moving forward with the formal creation of the board, which will be responsible for the long-term operations of the fixed-wireless broadband service.

For the second year, Garfield County Board of Commissioners authorized the Colorado Mountain College Foundation to apply on the county’s behalf for $75,000 in scholarship funds.

The state’s Colorado Opportunity Scholarship Initiative, or COSI, provides scholarship funds for 501c3 nonprofit organizations to administer. Each such nonprofit must be authorized by a county partner to apply for the funds, and then the nonprofit pledges to provide matching funds.

Garfield County has one health insurance provider and one hospital, causing residents to sometimes pay more than their mortgage for basic health insurance. 

To help lower the costs, Garfield County’s Board of County Commissioners unanimously agreed at last week's meeting to partner with Peak Health Alliance, a non-profit that helps communities bargain lower health insurance costs.

Garfield County Commissioner Tom Jankovsky said the county paid $25,000 through a supplemental budget for research to find exactly what the county’s medical needs are.

Garfield County is looking to diversify its economy so it’s not as dependent on oil and gas. The discussion comes as the county updates its comprehensive plan, which guides development through 2030. 

Mind Springs Health

Mind Springs Health will ask Garfield County’s Board of Commissioners to help fund both local substance abuse treatment, and the psychiatric hospital in Grand Junction, at the commissioners' meeting on Monday.
