(HS)2 / Colorado Rocky Mountain School

As schools everywhere are faced with the dilemma of cancelling summer programs amid the pandemic, ‘High School, High Scholar,’  known as '(HS)2' at Colorado Rocky Mountain School, or CRMS, in Carbondale is going virtual. 

Last week, Aspen School District raised teacher salaries by more than 5 percent. The district said this is meant to improve teacher retention and, ultimately, students’ experience in the classroom.

The Aspen School District has announced a new salary structure for teachers that raises pay by more than 5 percent for the upcoming school year.

While the tech industry is booming in the U.S., women’s participation in it is not.

Amy Gray is a 5th grade teacher at Aspen Middle School. Every month, her class is visited by a special guest, Adelaide Waters, a volunteer storyteller for Spellbinders. Waters has a new story to tell the students every month, and as Gray explains, the students are captured by each and every story. 

Gray shares the importance of oral storytelling for her students and the value the program brings to her classroom. Spellbinders Executive Director, Catherine Scales Johnson also contributes.

Five people are vying for two open seats on the Aspen School District’s Board of Education. Issues being discussed this campaign season include district funding, teacher housing and school culture. All of the candidates support ballot question 3A, which seeks school funding through property taxes.

When students in the Aspen School District start school this week, they’ll see some new faces.

The Aspen School District is hoping a change to its affordable housing rules will attract and retain more employees. Starting in August, school staff living in district rentals will only be allowed to live there five years. The school’s Employee Transitional Housing Program includes 43 units, mostly in Woody Creek and Snowmass Village.

The goal, says school superintendent John Maloy, is to provide more room for newly hired staff. He says last year, there was just one unit open for 27 new employees.

The Aspen community  is mourning the passing a long-time volunteer firefighter and former teacher. The Aspen Times reports Willard Clapper died at his home on Thursday after battling lymphoma. Clapper was raised in Aspen and, was well-known and well-loved by his community. On Friday his fellow firefighters held a remembrance.
