"Hot. Cool. Yours." - The Slogan for Sochi

Ruthie Brown

EDITOR’S NOTE: We are very excited to share the travels of Simi Hamilton’s family to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Over the next few weeks we’ll be sharing dispatches from Ruthie Brown and family as they give you a first-hand, “behind-the-scenes” look at the Olympics.

“Hot. Cool. Yours” – the slogan for Sochi 2014. I wasn't getting the slogan that is on every bus (English on one side, Russian on the other), flag, sign, building, until I was immersed long enough into the Russian culture.

It is truly remarkable what they pulled off here. An engineering feat, a grand spectacle, a logistical nightmare – these Games have been amazing achievement of an enduring people who have survived centuries of wars, starvation and freezing to death and they are still proud and thriving.

We've enjoyed trying to communicate with them in whatever form it takes. Al speaks Serbian so that seems to get us into a lot of interesting spots. Like side tours with taxi cab drivers, moved forward in the line, smiles from the security guards. When in a jam, it's embarrassing to always assume we'll find someone out of the hundreds of Olympic volunteers who, of course, speaks English. Regardless, we're working on our Russian. The Games are bound to be a huge success, not just for Russia but for all countries.
