Local Fire Departments Coordinate for Wildfire Season

About two dozen fire and municipal officials from the valley gathered at the Aspen Fire Station this morning  to coordinate efforts for the coming year. The meeting is called a wildfire tabletop exercise and aims to share knowledge on the lay of the land and resources available as wildfire season ramps up. Parker Lathrop is Deputy Fire Chief with the Aspen Fire Protection District. He says the drier than usual winter could create a challenge in the coming months.

“We always want to be prepared for a worst case scenario. So, having these discussions early spring before we have to go out in the field and deal with it defiantly helps us plan for any incidents that could possibly occur in the future.”

Lathrop says the tabletop exercise not only allows chiefs and first responders to know whom they are working with, and how their operations work, if they are called into assist. But, it also informs the various departments on what is available in state and federal funding reimbursements in case a wildfire happens.
