Third Street Center collaboration could lead to ‘community campus’

Third Street Center

There are lots of plans in the works for Third Street in Carbondale. That includes new affordable housing, parking and other changes. A new collaboration to pool resources could snag more funding for those improvements.

There are three projects planned for the section between the Third Street Center and Carbondale’s library. The center aims to improve parking. The Roaring Fork School District wants to build more than a dozen rental units. And the town of Carbondale is looking at making the street safer for pedestrians and bicyclists, among other things.

Colin Laird is executive director at the Third Street Center and is looking at how all three could land a grant to fund the projects.

“Since we’re all on the same time frame, is there an opportunity to work together to get more resources to complete the project,” he said last week.

The Third Street Center is also preparing for other improvements, like a new hot water heater, and adding windows and other amenities to its well-used gym.
