Valley down to one insurance provider for individual health plans in 2017

Elise Thatcher

Health insurance companies have submitted what coverage they want to offer in 2017. Only one carrier, Anthem, wants to sell individual plans in the Roaring Fork Valley through the state’s online marketplace.

Health insurance is a significant challenge for many in the Roaring Fork Valley, in part because there already aren’t very many plans available.

A Colorado Division of Insurance representative said residents should be able to buy individual plans, called Freedom, National, and Golden Rule, by working with insurance brokers in the area.

But more than one insurance broker has told Aspen Public Radio that, so far, insurance companies haven’t allowed that.

The division said Monday that officials will look into the matter.

Statewide, Anthem wants to increase rates by an average of 27 percent. It’s not clear yet what the actual rate changes could be for Roaring Fork Valley residents with Anthem plans.
