Carbondale artists are working together to design a gateway to welcome visitors to the Rio Grande ARTway in the town.
The ARTWay is a one-mile stretch of the Rio Grande Trail running through Carbondale that will have three public-art parks. An arch will be placed near Highway 133 to mark the beginning.
Olivia Pevec, a Carbondale metalworker, came up with the original design for the arch. Last week, she led a team of architects and artists in the first of two meetings that will help make her vision a reality.
Amy Kimberly, executive director of Carbondale Arts, said the collaborative process of building the arch reflects the overall goal of the ARTway. “The importance of it is really bringing all different factions of the community.”
Two of the project’s parks are set to open in May. The arch itself will be installed later.
