The community is invited to help create a mosaic picnic table for the Latino Folk Art Garden on the Rio Grande Trail in Carbondale.
Shannon Muse has been a mosaic artist for nearly three decades.
She’ll be heading up the creation of the table. She said that mosaic, which involves piecing together broken glass and tile to create images, is the perfect art form for a community project.
"I like the metaphor of small things coming together to create a whole product," Muse said. "I think that’s a fun way to think about human beings and society.”
Muse said that kids and beginning artists can feel comfortable chipping in, because there are no mistakes.
"It’s mosaic," she said. "If you break it in a way that you don’t like, it doesn’t matter. We’ll still use it. Sometimes it’s a plus."
Work sessions start Thursday at Paradise Art Glass in Carbondale. They’ll take place on Thursdays and Saturdays until the completion of the picnic table at the end of June.
The project will then live in the Latino Folk Art Garden on the Rio Grande Trail.
