Aspen Filmfest: 'Howard' Tells The Story Of The Man Behind Disney's Musicals

Aspen Filmfest kicks off Tuesday with the documentary “Howard.”  It’s the story of Howard Ashman, the lyricist for Disney classics like "Aladdin," "The Little Mermaid" and "Beauty and the Beast." Ashman died of AIDS when he was 39 years old.

The film’s writer and director, Don Hahn, worked closely with Ashman on several films.  He'll discuss "Howard" in a Q&A after its screening Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.

Hahn spoke with arts and culture reporter Christin Kay about his approach to making the documentary and why Ashman's songs have such a lasting legacy.

Aspen Filmfest runs tomorrow through Sunday, with panels and screenings at the Wheeler and Isis in Aspen and Crystal Theatre in Carbondale.

Contributor Christin Kay is passionate about the rich variety of arts, cultural experiences and stories in the Roaring Fork Valley. She has been a devotee of public radio her whole life. Christin is a veteran of Aspen Public Radio, serving as producer, reporter and interim news director.
