Vienna Teng takes the stage at the Wheeler on Saturday night. The songwriter and pianist takes an experimental approach in her music, but her approach to songwriting is all about stories and connection.
Teng’s songs mix classical piano with pop-music techniques, like vocal effects and looping, in what she’s come to call “chamber folk.” Her lyrics are meant to inspire empathy about everything from the refugee crisis to same-sex marriage.
Teng says playing in front of an audience re-connects her with what she loves most about being a musician: sharing stories with other people.
“I like to think of shows as just a gathering at someone’s house,” said Teng.
Her musical career has taken a backseat to her nonprofit work fighting climate change for the past several years. She says it’s actually made her see music in a new light.
"Now music has become this place in my life that’s just pure joy," she said.
Teng comes to the Wheeler as a part of the “On The Rise” series, which highlights up-and-coming talent.
