The school district’s teachers union declared an impasse in negotiations on April 10 after the AEA and district leaders could not agree on proposed salary increases in the upcoming academic year.

After several marathon meetings over the last three months to review the controversial project, the city of Aspen plans to work with Aspen Meadows to address ongoing traffic concerns in the neighborhood.

The project will redevelop the property’s existing 25 units into 60, mostly one-bedroom units to house full-time hospital staff. It’s part of AVH’s plan to build 256 housing units in the next 10 years.

The Aspen Education Association requested a 12% base salary increase for teachers. The Aspen School District offered an 8.5% increase.

For the last year and a half, the city has been exploring a new project aimed at maintaining affordable commercial rents in hopes of revitalizing the town’s local spaces.

APCHA Executive Director Matthew Gillen told the board during a March 18 meeting that the housing authority is already receiving questions about the upcoming closure. He asked board members whether they would be interested in considering a policy to implement during the closure.

During a fourth hearing on the Aspen Meadows affordable housing proposal on Tuesday night, the Physics center said it would remove two of the three single-family units originally planned along North Street after council members expressed concerns about those units during a March 10 meeting.

Residents of the 98-lot Cavern Springs Mobile Home Park, located between Glenwood Springs and Carbondale, asked council members to contribute funding toward their efforts to purchase the park that was listed for sale last year.

The city of Aspen will take a new approach to preserving local businesses in town through a community land trust meant to keep commercial properties affordable. The city is in the process of receiving approval from the Internal Revenue Service to declare the Aspen Area Community Trust as a nonprofit organization.
