The City of Aspen and Colorado Mountain College's Aspen campus are working together on a new program that could possibly expand infant child care services in town. 

Eagle County is extending their partnership with nonprofit Valley Settlement to address a severe shortage of early childcare educators.

The data from a Kids First survey regarding early childcare options was presented to the Aspen City Council last night.

In the Midvalley, it’s not uncommon for parents to add their child’s name to a waitlist at a childcare center long before the baby’s born. Michelle Oger directs Blue Lake Preschool.

“Several moms calls us once they find out that they’re expecting, to get on the waitlist even before they tell their spouse or extended family. They ask that we keep it a secret until they announce it to everybody else.”

More families in the Roaring Fork Valley need access to affordable early childhood education. That was the message from a panel discussion in Aspen Tuesday. Aspen’s mayor joined four others from the non profit and business sectors on stage at the Wheeler. Aspen Public Radio’s Marci Krivonen reports.
