A metal arch will be installed to mark the beginning of the Rio Grande ARTway in Carbondale this spring.
The ARTchway is meant to capture the character and history of Carbondale. It will be constructed partly out of reclaimed railroad ties and bicycles. It will span the ARTway at the intersection of Highway 133 and the Rio Grande, near the entrance of downtown Carbondale.
Shannon Muse from Paradise Glass will head up a community art project for the ARTchway. She’s offering fused glass classes to the public every Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. to create nearly 30 glass flowers for the sculpture.
Muse says it’s a chance to come try out the somewhat-obscure art of glass-fusing.
"We’ll be able to make a lot of experimental pieces, and you don’t often have the opportunity to experiment with the medium," she said.
In addition, the ARTway’s existing Latino Folk Art Garden will see new art this year, a mural created by youth from Stepping Stones.
A new section of the ARTway, the Youth Art Park, will be designed by Carbondale middle and high school art classes. It will be installed this year, where the trail meets Fourth Street.
